ADHD question

How long should a focus session be with ADHD?

The short answer

There is no single right length, and no study has found one for ADHD. A useful rule is: short enough that you will start, and long enough to get somewhere. For most people that is 10 to 25 minutes to begin with. Extend it when you are engaged, and take a real break after about 90 minutes of continuous focus.

What we know, and what we do not

Studies of scheduled breaks in students do not find a clear best pattern. One found that fixed breaks left students less tired and more focused than breaks they chose themselves. Another found no difference in how much got done.1 2 Neither studied ADHD.

What is well supported is that time is hard to judge with ADHD,3 and that nearer rewards work better than distant ones.4 Both suggest starting shorter than you think you should.

A way to find your length

How you feelTryWhy
Stuck, dreading it5 minutesThe only goal is to begin. Permission to stop is real.
Low energy10 to 15 minutesShort enough to say yes to.
A normal day25 minutesA common default. Long enough to make progress.
Engaged, right task45 to 50 minutesProtects deep work from being cut short.

These are starting points from common practice, not research findings. Adjust them from your own results.

Signs your sessions are the wrong length

  • Too long: you keep not starting, or you drift halfway through.
  • Too short: the timer ends just as you get going, and restarting is hard.
  • No end at all: you look up three hours later. That is hyperfocus, and it needs an outside signal.

Breaks count too

  • Put a timer on the break. Five minutes is easy to turn into forty.
  • Move. Stand up, get water, look out of a window.
  • Avoid feeds. A break spent scrolling has no natural end.

Where NoRush fits

In NoRush a session is 25 minutes unless you change it, with shorter and longer choices one click away. "I'm stuck" offers a rough 5 minute version. An optional check-in arrives halfway, a heads-up comes two minutes before the end, and after 90 focused minutes in a row it suggests a break.

Questions people ask

Is 25 minutes too long for ADHD?

Sometimes. If you keep avoiding a 25 minute session, it is too long for today. Drop to 10 and see what happens.

Should I take breaks even when I am focused?

A short pause every hour or so is a good moment to check that you are still on the right task and to look after basic needs. If the work is going well, keep it brief and go back.
